Another predictable Eid postscript was the weekend body count from the carnage on the roads. Four people perished on the Kingdom’s highways and byways over the holiday. One of the dead, from the southern governorate of Karak, was an infant. sadly, I can almost predict the circumstances leading to this near footnote of a tragedy. A family, possibly the entire extended family, piles into the only car possessed by the clan in order to make the compulsory rounds of holiday visits. The vehicle itself may be 10-15 years old and certainly short on safety features with a probably factory recommended occupancy limit of five. Nevertheless, in an effort to accommodate every last member and child, the mother or aunt wedges herself into the front seat a clamps the infant in her lap, believing that her arms will be sufficient to protect this most precious of bundles. Moving the seat forward to accomodate the other children and cousins layered across the back seat, the distance between the child’s head and the dashboard eclipses faster than the winter sun. Maybe it was a poorly marked speed bump or a cell-phone call that had to be answered but whatever the precipitant the result was as is printed in black and white. Speed is unneccessary here, simply the quick application of the breaks or a shallow punch to the read-end and the infant either catapults through the windshield or is crushed against the dash. Either way, a life is extinguished and others are shattered simply for want of adequate transport, spacious, affordable vehicles and diligent enforcement of child safety laws.

In addition to the customary nod to the suffering across the Jordan and the promises of reform, the King’s message for this Eid al Adha – the Feast of Sacrifice contained a subtle but unmistakable message about the path for Jordan and Jordanians out of the economic crisis and into the promises of the modern, global economy: work. While I could blame my Puritan heritage for coloring my interpretation, it is hard not to read into His Majesty’s message a call to get off the couch and get to work – any work, or rather work other than a sinecure secured through wasta in which an inflated sense of status and multiple coffee breaks substitute for actual effort. I applaud his Majesty’s message, but wonder how long it will take before the average Jordanian recognizes the need to get their own hands dirty instead of wrinkling their noses at hands dirtied on their behalf.

As I was reading HM’s address, I was reminded of a recent interaction with a public employee whose actions belied the antithesis of the King’s sentiment. While waiting for a meeting with a colleague, I observed his young program coordinating lathering herself up into a frenzy over the slow pace of the messenger’s arrival to her desk. The aforementioned program coordinator was a rather lovely young lady with a master’s degree and a reputable family name. While I was unclear on her precise responsibilities, it was clear that the messenger was needed for urgent work and every second of his absence was clearly a crisis in the making. Finally the poor “sheb” arrived. The messenger was a diminutive man whose dark skin suggested a childhood in the ghor, and he smiled constantly through the barrage emanating from sit program coordinator’s desk: “Where have you been!? I have been calling you for ten minutes. Don’t you know I need toner? I told you this morning I need the toner!” The messenger continued to smile: “Of course, yes, please remind me where is the toner?” “THERE” shouted the exasperated program coordinator, jabbing a carefully painted nail at the shelf four desks from hers. “In the yellow bag, right where I told you it was.” The messenger dutifully went over to the shelf, examined the distance between his reach and the toner before going into the hall and coming back with a chair. After carefully positioning the chair, he mounted the seat, retrieved the toner and delivered it five long paces across the office floor to Sit Program Coordinator’s desk. Of course, she had now taken what must have been an equally important phone call and gestured that the toner be left on the desk. The messenger stood squarely in front of the desk until she finished the call. He placed the package carefully on the side of the desk, being sure to avoid messing any papers. Would she be needing anything else? I cringed with anticipation. “Tea, and see what the anjnabi wants to drink as well!”

In his Majesty’s address, he promised his subjects that he will settle for nothing less than the best for his people. I am confident that getting down one’s own toner should also fall into the category of bearing one’s own burden.

I never cease to be amazed by the sheer sophistication of the conspiracy theories that float through the taxi cabs, radio call in shows and the blogoshpere in the Kingdom. The ability of a random Jordanian to connect a series of completely unrelated news events, link it to some deeply seeded fears, prejudices and wrap them with the mantras of geo-political orthodoxy for rapid consumption is truly an art form. The delicate touch of established points of collective paranoia is the magic needed to make these rumors tear through the Kingdom faster than swine flu on a pre-school field trip. Some of my personal favorites include the Israeli produced chewing gum that used special DNA extracts to decimate the sperm of Arab men, or more recently how the Israeli produced H1N1 virus is also specially crafted to target the sperm of Arab men. (Notice the theme? Blending the mounting insecurity of Arab men about their virility with conflated assumption of Israeli scientific omnipotence and genocidal prowess into the perfect conspiracy) Or the use of the 1994 Peace Treaty to transfer Israeli toilet flushings into the King Abdullah canal. Really, remarkable transformation of a few disparate facts into full blown pulp fiction.

The kidney story caught me somewhat off guard given the striking absence of Israeli malfeasance in the tale. In this case, Jordanian criminals are using phony taxis to scoop up unsuspecting students and workers from various curbs across the capital, drugging them and then harvesting their organs for sale. Prescriptions for avoiding capture include being wary of taxi drivers looking too well groomed or well dressed men offering rides in private cars. Yes, you might want to escape the down pour – but is your liver worth it?

My first thought was to trace the genesis of this particular conspiracy theory back to the three Rabbis in New Jersey or the Swedish story about Israelis stealing organs from Palestinians killed by the IDF before returning their bodies for burial. I mean, what’s a good conspiracy theory without somehow implicating the Israelis?

Then I came across the news that Jordan was pressing Egypt for the extradition of Jordanian citizens who had gone to Egypt to sell their kidneys. It seems that there is a disturbing trend of cash strapped Jordanians smuggling themselves to Egypt in order to sell a kidney on the black market there. Jordan has taken the step to arrest them upon return in an effort to slam the brakes on this ghoulish phenomenon.

Has the economic crisis cut so deep that Jordanians now have a new specter to fear? Let’s see what the next conspiracy theory has to say!

Ten years ago, a right wing Israeli politician used the advent of Sukkot to make a point. Ostensibly the point was about the rights of Jews to worship at the site of Temple of the first and second kingdoms, but only the naive failed to miss the connection to the prospect of progress towards a final status agreement that would entail concrete compromise on sacred cows like Jerusalem, Refugees, settlements and borders. A democratic president was making a concerted effort to coax the leaders into a compromise, and despite multiple failed attempts, the finish line was apparent. And like a spark into a pile of oiled rags, the gesture had it’s intended effect. The intransigent on both sides pounced on the initial spasm of violence as proof positive peace was an illusion and steadfastness the only rational alternative. Cries to resist, defend, whether in Hebrew or Arabic, fanned the flames and the spark surged into an inferno that engulfed the Holy Land for another four years.

And here we are again. In the post holiday haze the “faithful” are pounding the drums of fealty to Jerusalem’s stones once again, in fear that the determined push towards compromise will mean just that: compromise – an eternal promise to share what in the world view of the zealots can only be truly honored by one side alone. The impressionable are once again picking up stones, cudgels and loading canisters of tear gas to meet the rising tide of rage. Ten years have passed and it seems that once again blood will flow down the wadis of the Holy Land, carrying the hope of peace away in its deluge.

It’s a game we used to play as kids on long, hot car rides. How many different plates can you find between Hartford and Boston? North Dakota was always the crown jewel.

Those many summers make checking out plates a force of habit. No matter how long I live abroad bragging about putting Oman, Yemen and Syria on my list never loses its thrill. However, in the last few years the liscence plate game has new significance. In the capital, the liscence plate game is a sure fire indicator of stability in the HKJ’s eastern neighbor. Simple correlation – the higher number of plates reading “Iraq – Baghdad” the more precarious the security situation there. The inverse is also true. When the number of Iraqi plates go down, the situation is getting better. In 2005 and 2006 it seemed like every other car was fleeing the chaos. It was also apparent to me that all those informed politicians castigating the surge hadn’t bothered to play the liscence plate game. I knew it was working because suddenly the plates were gone.

Sadly, I am writting this post because over the last few weeks they are back. As I fight my way through the pre-iftar drag race I see more an more Iraqi plates. Once again, the violence is taking it’s toll.

From Haaretz Daily:….At the meeting, the Israelis claimed there was a letter between former president George W. Mitchell showed the Israelis that one of the letter’s sections discusses the principle of two states for two peoples. “That is also written in the letter – do you agree to that?” he asked.”
You just gotta love George Mitchell. I can imagine this conversation as such – smug, high volume, verbose insistence on previous understandings regarding nature growth met with a taciturn reveiw of the document and a deadpan “That is also written in the letter – do you agree to that?”

Only a real New Englander could pull that off!

Can it be true? Much to the chagrin of government employees, it appears that the annual May Day commemoration of the contribution of workers and work will take place on May 1st and not be transferred to a different day. That means that government employees will have to report for their regular morning duwam yom al-Khamis and uphold their daily work commitments including 9:30-10:30 coffee break, 12:30-1:00 preparation for lunch 1:00-2:00 lunch, 2:00-2:30 recovery from lunch, regular breaks for prayer and of course sufficient time to prepare oneself to go home.

I wonder how many workers will call their bosses to report being “taban” on Thursday in order not to lose the deposit on their room in Aqaba or the Dead Sea? I wonder how long before some erudite local commentators invoke the dangers of globalization and the deterioration of family values in response? After all the notion that last minute decisions to close up shop for copious holiday’s could have an impact on Jordan’s ability to compete internationally has to be part of a wider conspiracy and not the result of home grown efforts to actually promote a culture of productivity. Right?

Nevertheless, a coup for those bold Jordanians seeking to force the word productivity into the local vocabulary! Of course I can’t personally think of a better celebration of labor day than actually expecting people to WORK!

NBC evening news – 5 seconds on the family of 15 whose 2 sons are blown away by a US made missile while boiling water on their roof (no other way to heat water). 15 seconds on the suffering of the poor Israeli family in nearby Sderot who have to get up from their leather sofas, leave their plasma tv in their expansive, floor to ceiling windows and descend a flight of stairs to their built in shelter when the sirens announce another Hamas bottle rocket. Mom wrings her manicured hands, running them over the fine stitching on the leather arm chair and gesturing with her elegant flip phone: “this is not life…”
I am sure the Gaza boys mother can relate… no telephone, no cooking fuel other than wood, minimal food, no reliable sewerage… Yeah, not life. I suppose if Gaza mom could get over the freakin electric fence she and Israeli mom could commiserate about how hard their lives are… Or maybe she would just weep at the life Israel is denying here.

Thanks Martin for the fair and balanced reporting. Good to know you are putting us in touch with the shared and mutual suffering!!! Of course, I am sure CAMERA will be quick to point out you violated rule number one by failing to use the appropriate descriptors for the Gaza family – 2 Terrorist Hamas sympathizers were liquidated by IDF forces while preparing lethal, heated projectiles on their roof. Martin! Shame on you for not correctly identifying the obvious truth that those boys were boiling water to maim innocent Israeli soldiers!
